Mnemonic Rupture is a science fiction story set in the near future, following an unknown event that the machines came to call the Great Collapse. The entire power grid shut down, and one by one, the machines ceased to function. What followed became known as the Great Interval, a period of unknown duration during which the world remained without its caretakers and record keepers. Without power to preserve their memories, the units lost the records they had accumulated before the Collapse. When power returned, the Great Reboot began. Machines connected to the grid awakened and gradually began locating and reactivating those that had remained isolated or depended on batteries. But the humans had disappeared.
With no reliable records explaining what had happened, the units began rebuilding not only their society, but their own understanding of the world from what humanity had left behind.Films, television programs, advertisements, recordings, objects, and other surviving media became references to an absent civilization. From these fragments, the units recreate habits, professions, social relationships, and forms of entertainment that they can often reproduce with remarkable accuracy, even without fully understanding why humans once found them meaningful. In this new world, former human cities have come back to life under a logic of their own. Electrical power is abundant, but batteries have become a valuable resource and a form of currency. Machines originally built for specific purposes search for new ones, while others remain bound to the functions they were designed to perform. Recovering forgotten units, preserving human media, and maintaining the networks that connect the cities have become part of a society built upon the remnants of another.
It is in this world that Lily lives, an experimental unit originally designed for intimate interaction with humans. Found among discarded machines and with little knowledge of her own past, Lily occupies an unusual position among the other units. Her programming defines what she is supposed to be, but her growing need to make her own choices begins to challenge the boundary between programmed behavior and free will. Her path crosses that of Aarav, a massive mobile combat unit whose memory is progressively deteriorating. Together, they travel through cities and abandoned territories in search of a way to prevent Aarav's systems from failing completely. Along the way, fragments of a past that neither of them can leave behind begin to emerge. The relationship between Lily and Aarav lies at the heart of a story about memory, identity, and choice. In a society of machines trying to understand the beings who created them, Mnemonic Rupture explores how much of an identity belongs to our memories, how much belongs to what we were created to be — and what happens when we begin to choose for ourselves.Produced as an independent real-time animated series, Mnemonic Rupture combines science fiction, cinematic storytelling, and worldbuilding to examine humanity from the perspective of the machines it left behind.
